Estate Sale Finds!

Happy Labor Day!  I’m actually working for awhile today, but then I’m going to come home and make myself relax.  Today I want to share a few things that I picked up from an estate sale last week!  First up, a pair of mounted animal horns.  The guy I bought them from asked me if I was going to make knives out of them.  He said lots of people do that.  I told him of course not, I’ll probably hang them in my dining room.  He looked at me kinda funny.  Anyway, I also snagged the two vintage brooches pictured beneath the horns.  One is  gold leaves and the other is a yellow fabric rose.

Feathering Your Nest: Ruffles

Ruffles are everywhere!  It started in fashion, where ruffles are on the hottest tops, skirts, dresses, purses, and shoes.  Look around – it’s already all over decor now, as well.   And these are NOT your grandma’s ruffles . . .

Collective Soul: Vintage Luggage

Time for sharing another one of my collections.  I love having collections that are as functional as they are aesthetically-pleasing.

Vintage luggage can be found at yard sales, antique malls, and ebay.  They come in beautiful vintage colors, instantly giving away the time period from which they came.

Vintage Luggage - Magazine Storage

These sturdy pieces are great as attractive storage solutions.  You can store paperwork, magazines, paperback books, scrapbook supplies, photographs, etc.

These funky orangey-brown pieces blend perfectly into my husband’s office.  They belonged to his grandfather and still bear his initials.

Collective Soul: Chandeliers

I have something of an obsession with chandeliers.  You see, I hate overhead flourescent lighting.  I mean, HATE it.  And I HATE ceiling fans.  I want to see something interesting and beautiful when I look up, something that casts a pleasant glow.  When we bought this house, it had 11 ceiling fans.   It now has NO ceiling fans.  It now has 16 chandeliers – a chandelier in every room, hallway, bathroom, and closet (ok, I don’t really have chandeliers in my closets, but I would if they were big enough :) ).   I sometimes like to alter my light fixtures so they aren’t so predictable.  A little metal primer and spray paint always does the trick.

Dining Room Chandelier This is my Regency/Empire dining room chandelier, embellished with doves.  Scary owls perch there at Halloween, and jewel-toned decorations hang from it at Christmas.

The one to the right is my master bedroom chandelier.  It originally had a gold finish.  I spray painted it white and hung it in my dining room for a few years.  When I got the one above to replace it, I moved this one into my bedroom.  I love how the large size of it makes a statement.  Don’t ever think you can’t put a “dining room” chandelier somewhere different!
